veins.
Frantic, on the verge of full-blown hysteria, she wedged her fingertips into a seam
between bricks and lurched forward. With a pop, she managed to wriggle free. All at
once, the tunnel widened all around. She went back onto her hands and knees,
speed-crawled through a series of sharp bends, and came face-to-face with a snarling
wolf-cat.
Bandit. Lightheaded and dazed with relief, she flung her arms around her mate s
neck. My wonderful, wolf-cat mate. I love you.
The wolf-cat rubbed his cold, damp nose on her cheek, licked her face, and shook
his head to free himself from her embrace. He nudged her forward.
The Jäegers are behind me. She scuttled a few feet ahead, rounded a curve, and
stood when the ceiling lifted. A burst of light blinded her for a few seconds. She shaded
her eyes and pivoted.
Bandit was gone.
A clamor of high-pitched yips, growls, and howls erupted.
Oh God. He s fighting them. He doesn t stand a chance. She sank back onto her
knees.
Strong arms ensnared her waist. It s me, darlin . I m right here. We need to get you
out of here right away.
She wriggled in his arms and could ve cried with relief when she saw her Bandit s
craggy features. The horrible bashing, growling sounds rose to a crescendo. She stared
at the opening to the tunnel. What s going on down there?
Breede, Apache, and Taran are taking care of the Jäegers who were chasing you.
Kydd s waiting for us at a bar near here. We re in the basement of the museum. Bandit
swung her into his arms and marched down the hallway. He scanned her features.
You ve got cuts and bruises all over. What the hell happened?
I met my twin. The words popped out of her mouth. His name s Dimitri.
Bandit halted in mid-step. He stared down at her and brushed his finger over her
brow. You hit your head. Did you lose consciousness?
She ran her hand over the spot he traced, and her mouth dropped open when her
fingertips came away sticky and stained scarlet. No. I didn t pass out. I stumbled when
the Jäegers started chasing me and hit my head. It s nothing.
I m taking you to the ER that we Prymal use. Don t panic. I think you might have a
slight concussion. Bandit resumed his hurried striding.
Oh for cripes sake. Put me down. I don t have a concussion. I m perfectly fine.
And I did meet my twin. He s a She cupped a hand over her mouth and met
Bandit s intense perusal as the awful truth dawned. A Jäeger. My twin s a Jäeger.

Chapter Twenty-Eight
An hour later, Bandit and Kata scooted onto the padded leather bench opposite
Kydd. The corner booth housed in the restaurant known as Mike s Mexican Margaritas
was tucked away from the boisterous crowds jamming the wraparound bar area.
About time you got here. What took you so long? Kydd nursed a tall glass of
golden draft beer.
Bandit insisted on taking me to the hospital. One tiny cut and he thinks I have a
concussion. Kata fingered a small flesh-colored bandage on her temple.
Bandit had taken Kata to the private ER Prymal used in La Jolla, but even though
the docs had insisted she didn t have a concussion, he was still worried.
Concussion? Kydd addressed the one word question to Bandit.
She s all clear. No concussion. But my mate thinks she met her twin tonight.
Bandit still couldn t wrap his head around Kata s wild tale.
Whoa! You know the symptoms of concussion can take a while to develop. Kydd
scrutinized Kata s face. And she is pale.
Oooh, I could just kill the both of you. I. Am. Fine. And I did meet my twin. She
folded her arms and glared at first Kydd and then Bandit.
Okay. Have it your way. You met your twin. What does he look like? Kydd
swallowed a mouthful of lager and swiped his foam mustache with one hand.
You couldn t have missed Dimitri if you d seen him. He looks exactly like me, only
male. Kata touched her spiky locks. Even our hair s the same. You believe me, don t
you? I knew the second I saw him that he s my twin.
Bandit once again inspected her features, but found not an iota of evidence of
concussion. I believe you believe you met your twin.
A waitress appeared. Hi y all. Can I get drinks for the two of you?
Bandit ordered a double shot of brandy for Kata and a neat single malt scotch for
him. From the furious glares Kata shot him, he guessed she was still pissed that he
